Chief Technology Officer

Bancontact Payconiq Company is looking for a driven Chief Technology Officer to lead the Architecture, Technology and Security team. The CTO will actively contribute to the company strategy and the product evolutions, by providing original and creative insights and anticipating evolutions of the payment technologies. The CTO is part of the Executive Committee of Bancontact Payconiq Company and reports to the CEO.

Main Mission

The CTO mission is to oversee:

  • R&D,
  • Company Security 
  • Technological and security aspects of the Bancontact Card Scheme
  • Internal IT projects
  • Operational aspects of the Bancontact switch

On top of the above, the CTO intervenes as payment expert/architect in key customer or company projects.

Main responsibilities

The CTO will:

  • Be the executive responsible for 
    • the switch operation 
    • the overall company security (therefore having the CISO role in compliance contexts)
    • the technological innovation and all R&D aspects
    • all technological and security aspects of the Bancontact card scheme
    • the Security Office activities
  • Manage the relationship with several technical providers:
    • (re)-negotiate contract, and oversees the proper contract execution,
    • Be involved in the governance with the provider
    • Define and manage the related budget
  • Analyse technological evolutions in the market, and contribute to define those in which Bancontact Payconiq Company wants to adopt
  • Organize and lead major RFPs to source  technical infrastructure components for the Company
  • Be one of the two company crisis managers


As Executive Member of the Company Executive Committee, the CTO will:

  • Assume an active role in the Executive Committee, contributing actively to the discussions, helping defining the company strategy, and contributing to its daily management
  • Find Business opportunities for the Company  
  • Inspire the Bancontact Payconiq Company team and lead by example
  • Represent the Company in various settings, use its own professional network for the benefit of the Company

As Manager of the Architecture, Technology and Security team, composed of senior profiles, experts in Security and Architecture, the CTO will:

  • Lead and inspire the team
  • Help the team to realise tangible results and bring value to the market  
  • Follow up on projects under the responsibility of the team members

As technical expert, the CTO will:

  • Provide technical/security guidance for external/internal projects
  • Intervene/represent the company in different international/standardization organizations (ECPC, ECPA, Berlin Group, EMPSA…)
  • Act in support of the company’s architects or as senior expert for internal/external projects
  • Draft/review rulebooks and policies, document processes
  • Act as backup of the Architecture, Technology and Security team members

Skills & Mindset

  • Education: Master’s degree in related discipline or equivalent proven experience
  • 10 year experience in the payment industry and expertise in payment technologies, cards, POS, mobile, secure computing, APIs, cloud computing, payment protocols…
  • Ideally expertise in security and cryptography, or at least sufficient working knowledge in these matters
  • Strategic thinking: ability to focus on the larger picture while balancing the needs of technology with the other business needs and fulfilling business goals
  • Deep understanding of changing dynamics in the payments market, and ability to translate these into strategic opportunities for the company
  • Ability to act and think clearly under stress 
  • Ability to build efficient relations and communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders, with the ability to communicate complex technical matters to non-technical audiences
  • High level of maturity and problem-solving skills
  • Negotiation skills and business awareness
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work 
  • Leadership and people skills: ability to communicate well, to motivate people, flexibility to solve problems in a changing environment, positive spirit, sense of responsibility, mentorship…
  • Team player and coach able to provide guidance based on subject matter expertise and process related experience 
  • Fluency in Dutch and/or French and English is required
